The appearance of our smile is very important to us. A great smile can give us confidence and give the impression of health, happiness and success. Many studies suggest that people who are satisfied with their smile do better in their professional and personal lives, receive more opportunities and embrace those opportunities wholeheartedly. Teeth that are overlapping, crooked, or gap-toothed are a common complaint among patients whose primary concern is the appearance of their smile.
However, misalignment of teeth is more than just a cosmetic problem. Teeth that aren’t straight often have tiny gaps between them where food, debris and bacteria can accumulate and cause a variety of dental problems including plaque, decay and gum disease.
In the past, traditional orthodontic braces were the go-to solution for tooth misalignment. However, huge leaps in dental innovation have seen the arrival of Invisalign®, one of the newest treatments for crooked, overlapping or gap-toothed teeth.
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a revolutionary new treatment for patients who suffer from dental misalignment. Suitable for mild to moderate cases, Invisalign® uses a custom-designed series of transparent, comfortable liners that gently propel your teeth into the desired position. Each liner sits on the top of your natural teeth just like a mouth guard, and uses gentle pressure to move the teeth within the gums. Each course of treatment is completely unique to the patient and each liner is worn for a pre-determined amount of time before moving on to the following series. Using the liners in the correct order is essential for Invisalign® to work effectively.
Why choose Invisalign®?
Invisalign is becoming an increasingly popular choice for patients with mild to moderate misalignment problems, because of the unique benefits that it offers. Some of the reasons that people choose Invisalign® include:
Predictable outcome. Invisalign® technology means that a patient can see their predicted final outcome before they even start their treatment.
Comfort. After the initial period of adjustment, most patients find Invisalign® to be comfortable and easy to wear. There are no brackets or awkward wires that need to be adjusted, or that will scratch or catch the soft tissue inside your mouth.
Discreet. Invisalign® liners are made from transparent plastic, meaning they are much more discreet than traditional braces.
Removable. It is essential to have a disciplined approach to wearing Invisalign® liners in order to get the best result (recommended wear time 22 hours per day). However, they can be removed for very short periods of time such as to eat certain foods or to clean your teeth.
A solution for better dental health. Traditional braces are notoriously difficult to clean well around, but Invisalign® can be removed for you to perform your daily oral care routine meaning you can be sure you are doing everything you can to look after your dental health.
Creating your liners
In order to create your custom-designed Invisalign® liners you will need to attend an appointment where images of your teeth will be taken. This may include physical impressions in dental putty as well as a digital scanning system. This will help to draw up a completely accurate image of your existing teeth and allow us to plan your personal treatment plan.
Once this has been done, we will be able to advise you how long you can expect your treatment to last, and give you a preview of how your teeth will move and how they will look when your treatment is complete.
Regular check ups
It will be important to check the progress of your treatment regularly to ensure that your teeth are responding as they should. At the start of your Invisalign® journey you will be told how long to wear each liner for, and the importance of following the schedule of changing them. You will then attend regular appointments with Dr. Daniel – approximately one visit every six weeks – until your treatment has concluded.
Once you have finished your Invisalign® treatment, you will normally be advised to wear a retainer for some time after. This should keep your teeth in the desired position and prevent any retraction.
If you have crooked, overlapping or gapped teeth and would like to know more about Invisalign®, Dr. Daniel and the team would be happy to assist you. Give us a call today and get your journey started to healthier, more beautiful teeth.
